SUMMER 2010 NEWSLETTER A NOTE FROM TENNIS PLUS HEAD COACH IOAN EVANS (LTA-CCA & MTI Certified Modern Tennis Coach) Firstly I'd like to offer my congratulations our boys 16&U, 18&U and Girls 14&U teams on their recent aegon team tennis successes. The boys 16&U team came runner up in their Aegon county division. The Girls 14&U won their division and the Boys 18&U team were crowned county champions well done to all of you! The Tennis Plus Modern Tennis Academy Player of the month for June was Dominic Mcdonaugh. Dominic was a key player for both the boys 16 and 18&U teams and remained unbeaten in team singles competition all season. The Tennis Plus Modern Tennis Academy Player of the month for July goes to Miles Johnson-Manley. Whilst representing the Gloucestershire 12&U county team Miles picked up his best win to date by defeating the UK no. 6 player Charles Broom 4-2 4-2, this is a fantastic achievement to beat such a highly ranked national player. COACHING NEWS From August onwards Ben Griffiths will become my new assistant coach. Ben is Modern Tennis Trained by the MTI and has recently just completed his level 2 LTA qualification and will soon begin his level 3 later in the year. Ben will work with me on the schools and mini tennis development program and also the performance squads furthermore Ben will also be available for 1:1 lessons (see coaching section). The current coaching program stops for the summer break on July 24th - September 5th. Over the summer holidays there will be summer coaching camps available for all mini tennis and bronze squad pupils on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (click for booking form). There will also be a performance drills squad on Monday afternoons for our Silver and gold squad players (Click fro booking form). Furthermore there is a special offer 5 lessons for the price of 4 on individual lessons with both myself(Ioan) and Ben. If you would like to make a booking please contact me ASAP-07870620488. CLICK HERE FOR TENNIS PLUS MEMBERSHIP FORM Academy squad players are expected to represent the club (Glos. LTC/Taynton and Tibberton) in all team competitions when required. Bookings for places on courses/squads for September are now been taken. To book your place please contact Ioan-07870620488 or e-mail ioanevans@talktalk.net. Places are only booked once payment has been received. Payment for all courses/squads needs to be in blocks, e.g. Block 1- 7 weeks (9-9-10 – 23-10-10). Payment can be made by a posted cheque made payable to 'Tennis Plus' or by electronic bank transfer (BACS) send e-mail for bank details. ACADEMY LESSONS! Research has shown that it takes 10,000 hours over a 10 year period to reach elite level in any sport. These hours are made up of sport specific training, physical training and other sports (in early years). There is no doubt a huge time commitment is necessary to reach elite levels; it is important to bear in mind, however that the 10,000 hours are weighted heavily in the latter stages when the athlete will be training full time (in excess of 6 hours a day) however even at a junior level (under 10) if you have ambition of playing at a top county level or higher you do need to be playing 3 or more sessions a week, playing a sport just once a week is fine for ‘fun’ but if you have ambition to play at a higher level a greater commitment is required. I know that cost often can dictate the amount of tennis that an individual can play and whilst at Tennis Plus the group and performance squad sessions are fairly priced. I appreciate that there is quite a jump in cost to have additional individual lessons. With this in mind I am now offering “Academy lessons” which will last for 1hr (to include 15-20mins physical conditioning). The sessions will be for 2-4 players maximum of the same standard and cost £12.00 per person. If

have a few academy lesson slots available throughout the week . Adult Coaching Adult
Coaching will continue at:- Riverside Sports and Leisure Club on Thursdays 9.30am – 11.00am cost £8.00 paid on the day. Starting September 9th We
will also be starting a new fitness tennis session for adults ‘Cardio
Tennis’ time and cost TBC Competition/Tournaments From September there will be an opportunity for all squad/mini tennis players to compete every weekend in LTA tournaments held at the Riverside. Mini Tennis Red, Orange and Green every Saturday from 1130am(click for entry form) LTA grade 5 and 6 events for Silver and Gold squad players every Sunday from 1130am (Click for entry form) Click Here For A List Of Local Tournaments Over the Summer Holidays I'd reccomend all our squad players enter the GloucestershireJunior County Closed which takes place at East Glos. alongside the MTI (Modern Tennis International) we are eager to develop
the teaching of Modern Tennis throughout schools in Gloucester by actively
setting up afters school tennis clubs and also training the schools
PE teachers to deliver tennis in their lessons. See
